Ephesians Chapter 5

Ephesians 5:15 – “Watch How You Walk!”

So, hold an accurate view [of these matters], watching clearly 1 how you are walking – not as unwise persons but as wise persons. 2
1 Hold an accurate view of these matters, watching clearly: Or, KJV: walk circumspectly; ASV: look therefore carefully how; ALF: take heed; TCN: take great care; PME: live life, then, with a due sense of responsibility; BAR: par careful attention to the kind of life you live. How Christians conduct themselves in life is a subject that the disciple should study carefully.
2 Not as unwise persons but as wise persons: Or, GDS: do not act thoughtlessly, but like sensible men; WMS: not thoughtlessly but thoughtfully; NEB: like sensible men, not like simpletons. Proverbs 13:20, “He that is walking with wise persons will become wise.”

Dear Friends of the Nazarene,

We choose Ephesians 5:15 as the theme verse of the chapter – “Wise Conduct That Unifies.” Paul continues from the previous chapter as he describes the lifestyle and conduct of the New Person in Christ. This walk or conduct should imitate God in love. [1, 2] Certain forms of speech, thinking and conduct will prevent the Kingdom inheritance: talk that centers on sexual immorality, uncleanness, greed, foolish talking, obscene jesting. Christians should not even mention among themselves that which is disgraceful for the sexually immoral, unclean and greedy will never inherit God’s Kingdom. [3-5]

Rather Christians should continue walking as Children of the Light. [6-14] Avoid those who would seduce. Such enlightened Christian conduct will be characterized by goodness and righteousness and truth. Strive to please the Master and do not share in works of darkness. So be careful about your conduct. [15-20] Walking in wisdom use time wisely and continue to discern God’s will. Avoid drunkenness but continue to be filled up spiritually. Speak to one another with spiritual music.

Paul now addresses some intimate specifics within the family. [21-27] Wives should be submissive to their husbands. The Church of Christ is an example to wives with regard to subjection. The self-sacrificing Christian husband will be characterized by the love he shows his wife. As Christ does the Church, it is the duty of husbands to cleanse and sanctify their wives with Christ’s message. Godly marriage reflects a divine mystery: as Christ loves the Church, so husbands love their wives. [28-33] This love is manifest in providing nourishment and sustenance to the wife. The wife should manifest respect for her husband.

Abba our Father bless those who walk wisely.
