So, then, let us not continue to sleep. But rather, let us stay awake1 [Matthew 24:42] and remain sober.
|1||Stay awake: Sleep is often used of spiritual drowsiness and again Paul likely draws on Matthew 24:42. Compare Romans 13:11, 1 Corinthians 11:30, Ephesians 5:14, Revelation 16:15.|
Dear Friends of the Nazarene,
We choose 1 Thessalonians 5:6 as the theme verse of chapter five – Sober Sons. Paul now continues on the need to know well the times and seasons, for Jehovah’s Day is coming as a thief. [1-5] When humankind thinks everything is peaceful and secure they will be caught unawares by “sudden destruction.” Sons of Light will remain awake and keep their senses. [6-11] He stresses the need of faith, love and hope. With the hope of one day living together with Christ Christians need to be encouraging and constructive.
Paul concludes with various entreaties. [12-15] Christians should respect hard working elders, giving them loving consideration. The fellowship should be peaceable, but the disorderly should be reproved. The depressed consoled. With tolerance and patience, the weak should be supported. Never should hurt be repaid with hurt. Constantly rejoicing and praying, disciples should never extinguish the Spirit. [16-22] Testing everything, all should grasp what is good. Paul prays they will be completely sanctified and without blame at the Return of the Master. [23, 24]
Abba our Father bless all the Sons of Light.
