Where are the Dead –
According to the Bible?

SUMMARY ON THE “SOUL” AND DEATH

The word normally translated “soul by the Greek PSYCHE occurs about 900 times in the Jewish Greek Bible. In Hebrew the word NEPHESH occurs 754 times. In the Christian Greek Bible the word PSYCHE occurs an additional 102 times. Of these over 100 deal with the mortality of the soul. Not once is the soul equated with immortality. Those with a concordance or computer search program can examine each of these instances and see for themselves that the Bible teaches nothing on the subject of soul immorality.

Some of these are hidden by certain English translations such as the King James Version. For example, Numbers 31:19 and Numbers 35:11, 15, 30 all describe the killing of a “person” whereas the original language has it “killing a soul” demonstrating the soul can be killed or destroyed. Consider the following list of those texts which would show a mortal, not immortal, soul: Genesis 12:13; 17:14; 19:19, 20; 37:21; Exodus 12:15, 19; 31:14; Leviticus 7:20, 21, 27; 19:8; 22:3; 23:30; 24:17; Numbers 9:13; 15:30, 31; 19:13, 20; 23:10; 31:19; 35:11, 15, 30; Deuteronomy 19:6, 11; 22:26; 27:25; Joshua 2:13, 14; 10:28, 30, 32, 35, 37, 37, 39; 11:11; 20:3, 9; Judges 5:18; 16:16, 30; 1Kings 19:4; 20:31; Job 7:15; 11:20; 18:4; 33:22; 36:14; Psalms 7:2; 22:29; 66:9; 69:1; 78:50; 94:17; 106:15; 124:4; Proverbs 28:17; Isaiah 55:3; Jeremiah 2:34; 4:10; 18:20; 38:17; 40:14; Ezekiel 13:19; 17:17; 18:4; 22:25, 27; 33:6; Matthew 2:20; 10:28, 28; 26:38; Mark 3:4; 14:34; Luke 6:9; 17:33; John 12:25; Acts 3:23; Romans 11:3; Hebrews 10:39; James 5:20; Revelation 8:9; 12:11; 16:3.

However, even in the King James Version there are numerous such cases. (Job 7:15; 27:1-8; 33:18, 22; 36:14 [KJV marg: Their soul dieth]; Psalm 7:2; 16:10; 22:29; 40:14; 49:7-10; 63:9; 79:50; Ezekiel 18:4, 20)
