When the Jewish clerical hierarchy raised the question of divorce the Master answered that there was only one grounds for divorce – adultery. In response Christís own disciples made the statement: “Then it is better not to be married.” How did the Master respond? He said, “Everyone cannot make room for that statement, but only those who have the gift.” In affect Jesus agreed with the disciples that if ‘adultery is the only grounds for divorce it would be better not to marry’. After listing the three types of men who can be celibate the Master concludes, “Let the person who is able to make room for it, make room for it.” Paul comments in such a way as to be referencing our Master’s words. [1 Corinthians 7:7-9]
